Listen: Batsumi
Batsumi is a Jazz fusion band that was founded in Soweto, South Africa in the midst of the apartheid era. Inspired by the Black Consciousness Movement, their self-titled album, Batsumi, made in 1974, is a testament to the resilience and determination of Black South Africans of the time. Most of the group members learned how to play their instruments by ear. They didn’t use sheet music in the making of this album. Instead, “the band rehearsed and memorized the core melodies of each song, then stretched them out and let them wander during the recording sessions.” With each song varying from 3 minutes to 15 minutes in length, each song takes you on a determined, yet freeing journey. Listen to their album, Batsumi here on Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube.
