Listen: Ya Rayah

Experience the vibrant rhythms of North Africa with “Ya Rayah” by Rachid Taha. Taha was born in Algeria but moved to France with his family at the age of 10 where he later got his start as a musician. “Ya Rayah” was originally written and performed by another Algerian-French artist, Dahmane el Harrachi in 1973. It is a song about the migrant experience and longing for what’s been left behind. Rachid Taha’s rendition of the classic Algerian chaâbi song—a traditional folk music genre—incorporates elements of rock, electronic and traditional Arabic music, and takes listeners on an energetic musical journey. Listen to “Ya Rayah” by Rachid Taha here on Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube.
